The Meat Cutter, who directly reports to the Meat Supervisor, successfully provides a memorable customer shopping experience by ensuring each customer is greeted promptly and that each request for fresh meat is carried out accurately and efficiently. The Meat Cutter prepares, packages and labels meat department merchandise, ensuring customer’s needs have been met to maximize sales and in a safe and sanitary manner.

Key Accountabilities:
Follow all Cost-U-Less Meat Department general and specific fish, meat, pork and poultry standards, procedures, and goals
Ensure that prior to stepping into department that proper clothing is worn per local government regulations
Follow all Meat Department and government requirements regarding safety and sanitation procedures and policies
Inspects and reassembles department equipment sanitized the previous night
Transfer cases of fish, meat, pork and/or poultry from cooler and empties contents onto cutting surface or other prep area
Cut, trim, tenderize, and/or grinds fish, meat, pork and poultry per company procedures/standards for quality and consistency of finished merchandise
Per Company standards, properly package cut and ground merchandise to trays and wrap
Strictly adhering to Cost-U-Less price accuracy policies, weight merchandise and affix label per Company standards. If a special order, attach copy of customer order sheet. Contact customer to inform them that their order is ready for pick up or delivery
Transfer wrapped and labeled trays to rolling rack for meat case on sales floor or for storage in meat cooler
Stock meat case, pulling stock from cooler throughout shift to ensure merchandise is properly stocked, that the stock mix is correct and that the merchandise presentation is maintained to Company standards; adhere to company program requirements to maximize sales
Provide superior customer service to each customer
Greet every customer that is in eye contact range, giving each one a smile and a warm greeting
Ask each customer if they need assistance with finding anything; seek assistance from management when unable to answer customer inquiries on own
Be prepared to walk up to a customer and guide them to item they’re looking for in the Meat Department
Respond promptly to incoming calls to handle customer orders or issues. Successfully resolve customer issues; know when to escalate to supervisor or manager
Provide friendly, courteous, prompt, and accurate service to customers
Be prepared to assist customers with heavy and/or large purchases or cart
Thank each customer for shopping at Cost-U-Less
Perform any task assigned by management or supervisory personnel
Follow instructions promptly and efficiently, taking initiative when appropriate
Adjusts positively to change in direction or assignment; proven ability to comply quickly with new programs, methods, practices and procedures
Follow all Company safety and sanitation procedures and comply with local governmental laws
Clean and sanitize Meat department including equipment and utensils continuously throughout the shift; reassemble equipment after cleaning as necessary; at the end of the day leave sanitized equipment for the day shift to reassemble
Read, understand and follow all label instructions for the proper use and precautions of cleaning products
Sweep, mop, spray, wash, apply cleaning agents, and wipe to clean and sanitize the Meat area throughout shift
Wash all meat cutting equipment and utensils using appropriate sinks
Log all sanitation procedures performed during shift in Sanitation Log book including those procedures performed for cleaning and disposal of trash
Properly complete Production and Grind Log books each day
Comply with all health codes required by local laws
Continuously use proper lifting techniques
Continuously use proper box cutting techniques
Perform preventative maintenance for machinery, equipment and implements. Inform Supervisor
Ensure that the proper amount of Meat Department supplies are on hand at all times; Check for and replenish supplies throughout shift
Assist the Receiving Department in the receipt of department meats and supplies
Maintaining organization set out by Department Management, store back stock, ingredients, and supplies in cooler and/or freezer per Meat department procedures
Re-stock necessary supplies in the Meat department for easy use on each shift
Participate in monthly and semi-annual financial/physical inventory
Desired Skills & Experience:
Must possess all licenses and/or certificates required by the local government where applicable
High School diploma or a combination of experience and education preferred
Minimum of 3 years of meat cutting experience a must
Highly skilled knife cutting, meat saws and other Meat department tools techniques a must
Basic math, reading and writing skills required
Ability to communicate in local language(s)
Strong human relations skills; has a pleasant disposition and is willing to smile and interact positively with others
Cooperate with other team members in a busy environment in a professional manner to accomplish the business goals
Able to anticipate and accommodate customers concerns and needs; likes to help people
Possess a passion to excel and provide excellent customer service
Able to provide a clean police record where applicable by local regulations
Able to provide a current health certificate where applicable by local regulations
High level of competency and ability to safely work with knives, meat saws and other meat department tools
Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
Able to multi-task
React proactively, quickly and appropriately in identifying problems and finding solutions to customer inquiries and requests, knowing when to call a supervisor or manager to assist the customer
Able to be organized and maintain an area that is clean, safe and sanitary
Must be able to familiarize self with merchandise locations on sales floor to assist customers
Able to work well with other team members of the store

Working Conditions:
Able to stand for long periods of time throughout shift
Able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs on a consistent basis
Able to stoop and bend on a regular basis
Ability to work in varying conditions from heat to cool (as low as 20° Fahrenheit/-6.66° Celsius)
Fast paced work environment
Ability to work flexible hours, shifts and days including morning to evening, weekends, overnight and public holidays
Able to work inside and outside the building
Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
