Merchandise Supervisor

The Merchandise Supervisor who directly reports to the Merchandising Manager, successfully supervises the daily activities of stockers and forklift drivers to ensure the store is stocked and ready for customers prior to opening and throughout the day.

Work Schedule: This is an overnight shift 12:00am to 8:30am (full time).

Key Accountabilities:

Direct activities of staff per shift to ensure store is merchandised to company standards
  • Assign tasks and aisles to forklift drivers and stockers on every shift
  • Ensure forklift drivers and stockers are following all driving and safety procedures including weight capacity, load limits and secured pallet configuration to provide a safe shopping/work experience for customers and employees
  • Prepare list of merchandise to be brought from steel, by forklift driver, for stocking
  • Ensure that all forklift drivers and stockers are following Merchandising procedures regarding categorization, space allocation, product placement, organization, product rotation and signage
  • Review plan-o-grams on a daily basis; ensure that stockers are following the plans to maximize sales
  • Oversee proper rotation of merchandise by staff, ensuring that code dates are adhered to and that product is rotated in a timely manner and to company requirements
Provide superior customer service to each customer
  • Greet and ask each customer if they need assistance with finding anything; seek assistance from management when unable to answer customer inquiries on own
  • Be prepared to walk up to a customer and guide them to the item they’re looking for
  • Provide friendly, courteous, prompt, and accurate service
  • Be prepared to assist customers with heavy and/or large purchases or cart
  • Thank each customer for shopping at Cost-U-Less
Continuously walk the sales floor to ensure that the floor is safe and ready for customers at all times of the day per company procedures/standards
  • Along with other department team members, stock, merchandise and face assigned aisles throughout shift
  • Using safe cutting procedures, safely cuts boxes for display/accessibility of merchandise; safely cuts twine or shrink-wrap from pallets
  • Certify that the temperature of all refrigerated equipment is operating within the range that is required for that particular piece of refrigerated equipment
  • Immediately upon discovery, report all dangerous and/or hazardous conditions or situations to direct manager, Manager on Duty (MoD) or Store Manager
  • Make sure that all product placed on the floor by staff is the correct quantity, that it’s quality is to company standards, and that any damaged and out of code product is removed from the sales floor and dealt with per company procedures
  • Continuously audit assigned area to ensure that all product is accounted for and that any discrepancies are properly researched, documented and reported to management
Perform any task assigned by management or supervisory personnel
  • Follow instructions promptly and efficiently, taking initiative when appropriate
  • Adjusts positively to change in direction or assignment; proven ability to comply quickly with new programs, methods, practices and procedures
  • Participate in monthly and semi-annual financial/physical inventory
In conjunction with the Merchandise Manager ensure that staff is prepared and able to work to their highest potential
  • Properly train all new staff members on the job responsibilities of their position
  • Assist in developing the employees, working with them on continuous improvement
  • Provide insight on each employee during evaluation period regarding their performance, productivity, attendance, ability to work within the merchandise team, amount of direction needed, ability to follow directions, attitude and any other information that will assist in providing the employee with a complete review of their performance
  • Monitor, analyze and report to direct manager payroll dollars spent, ensuring that the right amount of staff are used per shift without being over or under on any given shift
  • On a weekly basis review department reports with Merchandise Manager, providing insight and solutions on positives and negatives found; enact all solutions to resolve issues
  • Provide employees with appropriate counseling both verbally and in writing. Know when an employee needs to be given a verbal counseling or be written up, discussing with direct manager all written counseling’s prior to giving to the employee. Consult with Corporate Human Resources when appropriate
  • Review safety training on an ongoing basis with staff, ensuring that all incidents by employees are documented on the appropriate forms and reported to the Safety Manager within 24 hours. Ensure that direct manager, Manager on Duty (MoD), and Store Manager are informed promptly
  • Promptly report all customer incidents to the Manager on Duty (MoD); lend assistance or reassure the customer while emergency personnel are en route; ensure that the incident is documented on the appropriate forms
  • Oversee all forklift drivers and stockers to ensure that they are properly following the Spotter Program procedures
Desired Skills & Experience:
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred
  • Prior merchandising and forklift operations experience is preferred
  • High school diploma a plus
  • Must have intermediate math and reading skills
  • Intermediate knowledge and ability using MS Office 2007 and above
  • Intermediate computer skills a plus
  • Strong human relations skills; willing to interact positively with others
  • Cooperate with other team members in a busy environment in a professional manner to accomplish the business goals
  • Ability to communicate in local languages
  • Able to anticipate and accommodate customers concerns and needs; likes to help people
  • Possess a passion to excel and provide excellent customer service
  • Strong work ethic within a team environment
  • Able to provide a current health certificate where applicable by local regulations
  • Must be able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information properly; develop alternative solutions and use reason even when dealing with emotional topics or situations
  • Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Possess a strong attention to detail, maintaining a high level of efficiency and accuracy at all times
  • Must promote a positive working environment and individual relationships within immediate team and throughout the store
  • Must understand company goals and contribute to the successful attainment of those goals
  • Able to multi-task
  • React proactively, quickly and appropriately in identifying problems and finding solutions to customer inquiries and requests, knowing when to call a supervisor or manager to assist the customer
  • Must be able to familiarize self with merchandise locations on sales floor to assist customers
  • Must be organized and maintain high standards regarding safety and cleanliness for the customers and employees
  • Able to work well with other team members of the store
  • Have a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, dependable, be a team player
  • Maintain a commitment to honesty, integrity, and high levels of efficiency and accuracy at all times
  • Accepts responsibility for choices and decisions
  • Willingness to perform tasks as assigned by managers and supervisors and to assist customers, suppliers and other employees as needed
Working Conditions:

 

  • Able to stand for long periods of time throughout shift
  • Able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs on a consistent basis
  • Able to stoop and bend on a regular basis
  • Ability to work in varying conditions from heat to cool
  • Fast paced work environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours, shifts and days including morning to evening, weekends, overnight and public holidays
  • Able to work inside and outside the building
